Ísland

Ísland is Icelandic for Iceland!  And that's where Finnur and I both come from! :)  Of course Iceland is the bestestestest country in the world, which needs no explaining.  The population is around 280000 people, which leaves plenty of space for everybody...

This is what Iceland looks like (it's not quite that green though!)

As can be seen below, Iceland is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Iceland is actually being torn apart slowly each year (about 2cm), since it's sitting on both the European and American Tectonic plates - and they happen to be moving in opposite directions!  We therefore get quite a lot of earthquakes and the occasional volcanic eruption - but that's all part of the fun!!

Here's a picture from the Heimaey eruption in 1973.

The really good thing about the geothermal heat in our ground is the fact that we get lots of hot water for heating up the houses and go swimming!  We have a good number of outdoor pools around the country - but one is more special than the rest - The Blue Lagoon.

Believe it or not this picture is from Iceland!  It shows people
sunbathing at the Laugardalslaug swimming pool in Reykjavík

We're apparently also very "artsy" people - a long long time ago our ancestors, the Vikings, wrote the Sagas which are our contributions to "world literature".  But without doubt the most famous Icelander today is...

...Björk!

That'll be all for now.  All in all - Iceland is a strange place... and highly recommended to visit... if you have a lot of cash to blow off...!
