Christmas Eve
December 24rd 2001 (HMG) - [Put online December 26th 2001]
Unlike Christian people in most other countries, Icelanders open their Christmas presents on Christmas Eve, leaving the parents free to sleep in on Christmas Day. This year, like some years before, Finnur and I decided to split up and stay with our respective families for the majority of the evening. I went to my grandparents' place (Beykihlíð) while Finnur stayed in Mosfellsbær with his parents. He then came and joined me for a little while before we went back to Mosfellsbær.
Finnur and Hrefna about to leave Mosfellsbær to
pick up some family members around town and drop Hrefna off.
I took hold of our camera, so to begin with there will only be pictures from "my side".
Finnur's side will be available shortly (hopefully).
Here is my grandmother, Hrefna, besides the Christmas-tree
which was almost held aloft by presents!!
And here she is again besides a picture she painted herself. Very pretty!!
My mother and my brothers joined us at Beykihlíð. From the left:
Ásdís (mother), Bjarni, Nökkvi, Hrefna and Pétur.
Everybody helped out in the kitchen.
When everything was ready, we sat down to eat a glorious dinner.
Salmon for starters, smoked pork as a main dish and cheesecake for dessert.
Then (far too late according to my brothers) it was present time!!
Pétur and Bjarni played Santa Clauses and distributed the parcels.
My granddad got some nice pullovers which he was very happy with.
My mum got lots of other stuff which she was also very happy with.
And this is what our stash looked like! Lots of books and really nice stuff.
Thank you everybody! :)
Among our presents was the Icelandic version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?!"
which will proudly join our Icelandic Scrabble at home in California! :)
All too soon the night was over and Finnur came to pick me up.
We headed back to Mosfellsbær where we had even more presents waiting (!!!)
and stayed up until 3am (again!) playing the Millionaire-game.
Steinunn and Finnur in Mosfellsbær before the marathon Millionaire-run! :)
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY!!
GLEÐILEG JÓL ÖLL SÖMUL!!
:)
