Gingerbread
December 16th 2001 (HMG) - [Put online December 16th 2001]
Today was the great gingerbread day! But first we met up with Jóhann and Kata which some people might remember from this summer when they came and spent a week with us in California!
Jóhann and a rare sight for sore eyes - Coca Cola in glass bottles!
Kata and Hrefna cheerful with drinks! Kata looks quite a bit unlike herself
on this picture, but it's the only one we've got!
After lunch we said goodbye to Kata and Jóhann and whished them a good trip back north to Akureyri.
Finnur in downtown Reykjavík
Hrefna beside a pretty nude wooden girl in the Reykjavík Public Library.
After a bit of key-mix up, Finnur left with his dad to go fix a computer
and I went walking to my mum's to bake gingerbread. Here's snapshot
of a part of downtown Reykjavík
In a shop window I saw the 13 Icelandic Santa Clauses.
On top are their parents, Leppalúði and Grýla.
I walked part Landakotskirkja, which is the main Catholic Church
in Iceland. As you can see we (the Icelandic people) are not very Catholic...
We're not so Jewish either but we still use a 7-light candelbra
as a Christmas decoration. This is the hospital opposite the church.

And finally I arrived at my mother's house. She and my brothers live
on the third floor (where the red Christmas lights are).
Here's the baking gang: me, Bjarni, Nökkvi, their other half-sister Helga and Pétur.
Why can't boys ever be neat?!?! Helga wants to give them a good thumping!
Pétur squishing his gingerbreaddough
Nökkvi was the cleanest one of the lot. What a teen!
Here is Bjarni with his gingerbread man
Then mom and I assembled the pre-baked gingerbread house.
Since this was our third time of doing it, we're getting pretty good!
Here's mom putting on the snow while Pétur and Bjarni watch.
Meanwhile, Finnur enjoyed himself decorating the gingerbread cookies.
I never knew he was this artistic!!
The rest of the us charged the house an made a complete mess as usual!
But I'm sure it's yummy! :)
Here it is from the other angle... And "jól" is Icelandic for Christmas.
Only one week to go until Christmas! :)
