The First Day
December 15th 2001 (HMG) - [Put online December 16th 2001]
After sleeping for roughly three hours during the wee-hours of Saturday the 15th, Finnur and I got up and decided that unless we went outside and met people, we would just end up sleeping on the sofa, which of course is no good when you're trying to assimilate to the current time-system. So out we went... Well.. so out I went, because Finnur'd gotten his first computer assignment of the day - the home computer had a virus that needed taking care of. So I went outside to take a couple of pictures of the house and it's surroundings.
A corner of the house in Mosfellsbær where Finnur's parents live.
Notice how green the grass is... It's December 15th for crying out loud!!
Here's the view from the backside of the house. They live on the outskirts
of civilization so what you're looking at are mostly stables for the horse track that's on the far left...
Unfortunately it was drizzling so the rest of the scenery is missing from view due to clouds
First stop of the day... our old home at Byggðarenda where Finnur's
sister Eyrún (shown here) and family, his brother Baddi and girlfriend and
their grandfather Eymundur all live. Eyrún doesn't like cameras much...
although I'm hoping that after she's been around me for some time, she'll get used to it! :)
We tried everything to get a picture - Finnur even disarmed her but
Margrét (her daughter) came to her rescue!!
Here's Finnur's grandpa, Eymundur.
Then it was on to my family! Here are two brothers, Pétur and Bjarni,
playing on their mothers bed! (The Sega computer is to the right, off-camera)
Here's what Icelandic kids to for Christmas... They put a shoe on the windowsill so
that Santa can put candy in it during the night... or a potato if they've been naughty!
There are 13 Icelandic santas and one comes to town every night for the 13 nights before Christmas.
It didn't take long for Finnur to get more computer jobs. By now he's
got at least FIVE computers to fix!! Bjarni (10), Nökkvi (14) and
Pétur (almost 12) standing behind him.
Saying goodbye for today. Finnur with Nökkvi (in his brand new T-shirt)
and Pétur (showing off his teeth :)
Then we went back to Mosfellsbær for a dinner with Finnur's family.
Here's Baddi, Finnur's kid brother kissing (or trying to kiss)
Aðalheiður, his girlfriend, with a little help from his fake nose...
The two youngest in Finnur's immediate family:
Hilmir (Inga's son) and Margrét (Eyrún's daugther)
Then it was time to start the glorious eating. Inga (Finnur's sister), Hilmir (Inga's son),
Margrét (the helpful daughter of Eyrún), Steinunn (Finnur's sister) and Finnur himself.
Steinunn and Þórarinn (Finnur's dad - as you should all know by his last name!)
watch Finnur carve the delicious leg of pork.
On the other side were Anna (Finnur's mom), Baddi (Finnur's brother),
Aðalheiður (Baddi's girlfriend) and Eymundur (Finnur's granddad).
After dinner we had some coffee and chocolate before Inga asked us
to take pictures of Hilmir for their Christmas card. We of course obliged
and took a few pictures as can be seen below...
The chosen one. It's unbelievably hard to get kids to
stay still and smile for the camera... as can be seen here:
Margrét and Hilmir jumping up and down on the sofa.
The rest of the night was spent photoshopping the various images and making the actual Christmas Card, which we then sent to Kodak for development via the internet. Ain't technology grand?! :)
